Online Poker - Yet Another Member Joins Team Absolute
May 5, 2005 Source: Absolute Poker SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - (PRESS RELEASE) -- This past Friday night at AbsolutePoker.com, Kevin Bott from Rexburg, Idaho, known as "Bottsky" at AbsolutePoker.com, became the newest member of Team Absolute to compete at this year's WSOP. The online poker destination handed over its second World Series of Poker $10,000 seat in as many weeks to "Bottsky" -- who played some very sharp cards to beat Mark Seif, Absolute Poker's resident pro.
Every Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT leading up to the WSOP main event in Las Vegas, which starts July 7, AbsolutePoker.com's Mark Seif takes on the AbsolutePoker.com weekly Tournament Leader Board winner. The FreeRoll prize pool starts at $1,000, and Absolute Poker adds $1,000, a custom Absolute Poker jacket, and an opportunity to win a WSOP Seat every week. Any player that beats Seif in the "Mark Seif Heads-Up Shoot Out" will win that week's prize pool and automatically qualify to play him again the following Friday at 9 p.m. EDT for a chance to win a $10,000 World Series of Poker Seat. This Saturday, Steve "Horse" Wiesman, screen name "Horseraching," is the Tournament Leader Board winner and will challenge Seif for $2,000, the custom jacket and his chance to play Seif again for the WSOP package.
Friday night was very exciting, with over 2000 spectators logging in to watch and chat during the play-off. "It was really something, there was a huge audience chatting, and a majority of the folks were cheering hard for me," Bottsky said. "It is a great feeling to win this. I'm very excited about my second WSOP appearance. I just hope I can close it out this time; last year I finished 14th."
AbsolutePoker.com, which provides games 24/7 for thousands of concurrent players around the world, is quite active in qualifying players for the WSOP main event in Las Vegas through daily online poker satellite tournaments in which players enter for as little as $5. Players that win their WSOP seat not only receive buy-in to the WSOP main event, but money toward airfare and accommodations. To participate, players simply need to download the free poker software at AbsolutePoker.com .
"The play-off is a great format. The quality and talent of the players continue to amaze and challenge me. I am genuinely excited to welcome each and every new member of the AP WSOP Team if they beat me, and I'm quite certain that team AP will do very well at the WSOP this year because our qualifying players are very talented," said Seif. "This is clearly the fastest growing sport in the world. I love it that players can compete at a high level early in their careers. It forces me to keep on top of my game."
"I think I'm ready," said Steve "Horse" Wiesman, an Abosolute Poker player who intends to turn part-time pro by September of this year. "All my friends play at AbsolutePoker.com. If I win this weekend, I'm going to donate $500 to the Lance Armstrong foundation. If I'm able to win the "Shoot Out" again, I'm going to take some of my Absolute Poker friends like Kev1, Sinnabunn, Raymondo, Slitman. The WSOP should be a lot of fun, but I have to win first."
The 36th annual World Series of Poker begins June 2 at the Rio Casino in Las Vegas. The Rio will host all but the final two days, which will be played July 14 and 15 at the Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas, the original home of the tournament. With more than 6,000 expected entries, the WSOP's $10,000 buy-in main event is expected to generate a prize pool of US$60 million, making it the richest sporting event in the world.
There are an estimated 50 million active poker enthusiasts around the world, and the numbers continue to increase. Leading analysts predict that online gaming will soon become the largest industry on the Internet, outpacing both retail and travel in revenue. AbsolutePoker.com, which is five times larger than the largest land-based poker room in the world, is the fastest-growing online poker site out of an estimated 260 poker sites, regularly attracting more than 10,000 players.

Poker Club - Blind Woman Crowned First Humboldt County Poker Champion
May 4, 2005 The Associated Press BLUE LAKE, Calif. (AP) - A blind woman has been crowned the first Humboldt County Poker Champion.
Deborah Crumley, legally blind and diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, won the $10,000 grand prize Sunday at the Blue Lake Casino.
Crumley, 52, bested 386 other players to win, some traveling in from as far as Arizona to vie for their shot at the cash or the trip to Las Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker. She opted for the cash prize.
The win came at a good time, she said.
"I was let go from my job because of my disability and they couldn't keep me on," Crumley said. "I had been on disability for over a year."

Now You Will be Able to Bet, Call, Raise, Fold, and Even Go All-In from Your Cell Phone
May 3, 2005 By: Adam Balkin, Tech Talk You do not have to be in a casino or in front of a computer to play poker for real money.
An online gambling site has come up with a program that lets people play from their cell phones.
"We have seven card, Omaha, high-low and hold 'em, which is our most popular game," said Patrak Selin, the CEO of PokerRoom.com. "The minimum bet is $1, and the maximum bet is $100."
The program links cell phone users to online players or other cell phone users. Like a real casino, PokerRoom.com takes a small percentage of the winnings to make its money.
The gambling is all legal because PokerRoom.com is based in Sweden and its computer servers sit on an Indian reservation in Canada.
Right now, the program works on just two kinds of cell phones -- the Nokia 6660 and the Sony Ericsson 700i. PokerRoom.com says it plans to have the service working on about 80 percent of all cell phones within the next few months.
Cause for concern?
Like gambling online, there is an added risk. If your service cuts out in the middle of a hand, you could lose the money you've bet.
"If somebody is raising as you disconnect, it's the same as if you're folding," Selin said. "So you need to have a good connection. If we see that you're disconnected, you will have an extra 30 seconds to get connected again."
Dr. Stephen Ross, the associate director of the Substance Abuse and Alcoholism Program at New York University and Bellevue Hospital, is concerned about another problem: addiction.
"I think it's a potential nightmare," Ross said. "It's sort of like making a drug available everywhere. Imagine if people could use cocaine or heroin everywhere like cigarettes.
"You can't smoke a cigarette in a bus or a public space, but now you can gamble sort of privately, right there, anywhere. So I think it's a total disaster. When you give people who could potentially become addicted that much availability and that much ease, it's going to be combustible."
Selin said his company takes addiction problems seriously.
"People can restrict themselves so they don't lose more money than what they believe is within their limits," he said. "We also train all of our staff at customer support to take care of problem gamblers."

The Orleans Offers 25% More Chips in Tournaments
May 2, 2005 by Jen Leo pPlayer.com The Orleans, off The Strip in Las Vegas, offers 25% more chips in tournaments when a player buys a $5 Dealer's Bonus Card. Have you ever heard of this? They have 35 tables in the back near the Self Park and run two tournaments a day. One is at 12 noon, and the other is at 7 PM. Most of the tourneys have a $40 buy in, with a $20 rebuy. But the price goes up a little on the weekends. The most expensive entry is on Saturday night for $125 with a $100 rebuy.
The rest of the live games are low limit, so it's kind of a waste of time for those who usually play $80-$160. In July, The Orleans will be hosting their Orleans Open from July 16 - 31st. Look at that, nice timing to get the folks still wanting action after the WSOP!
